Canada’s New Government Supports City of Burlington

The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, and Mike Wallace, Member of Parliament (Burlington), today announced $2.5 million for the Corporation of the City of Burlington. These funds will support the City of Burlington in the construction of the Burlington Performing Arts Centre. The Centre will serve community arts organizations, provide a venue for professional arts presentations, and revitalize the downtown core.

"Canada's New Government is proud to invest in Burlington, a city that is recognized for the diversity and vivacity of its community," said Minister Oda. "This project will bring a versatile performing arts space and community-use facility to Burlington. It is an example of how our Government is committed to improving accessibility to high-quality artistic experiences for all Canadians."

"I am proud to be part of a Government that supports initiatives that enhance access to arts for our community and furthers the pursuit of excellence in the city of Burlington," said Mr. Wallace. "This project will significantly improve facilities for the arts community and contribute to the economic vitality of the region."

"We are very excited to receive this good news from the federal government and appreciate the support of Minister Oda and our M.P., Mike Wallace," said Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson. "The Burlington Performing Arts Centre will enhance artistic and cultural opportunities for all members of our community."

The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is planning to open in spring 2010. The Centre will host a broad spectrum of performances and events: local productions, theatre, dance, musicals, and family programming.

Canada's New Government will provide funding through the Cultural Spaces Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing, visual and media arts and to museum collections, heritage displays, and exhibitions.
