Canada Marine Day Set for May 26
Ottawa - The Chamber of Marine Commerce (CMC) announced today that Monday, May 26 has been chosen as Canada Marine Day 2008.
After consultation with industry and parliamentary colleagues, Marine Industry Caucus Chair, Mike Wallace (MP, Burlington, Ontario) agreed this date would be ideal for the annual national celebration of Canada's marine industry. "The marine industry is vital to Canada's industrial future and overall prosperity," said Wallace. "And Caucus Marine Day is one day during the year for everyone to officially recognize and celebrate the importance of the marine sector to our country."
CMC Chair, Michael Kennedy (ArcleorMittal Dofasco) noted, "This is an important day to pay tribute to our marine industry past, the importance of our present marine industry and the opportunities for us all from future marine transportation success."
Len Penner, President of Cargill Limited and CMC Director added, "We look forward every year to joining colleagues and officials in Ottawa to celebrate what marine transportation means to our success as companies and to our prosperity as Canadians."
President and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority, Patrice Pelletier, further commented, "With ,marine transportation accounting for 97% of non-Canadian-international trade, it's clear we must continue to invest in our marine highways as gateways to the world."
Amonst scheduled Canada Marine Day activities on May 26, federal parliamentarians and senior government officials will join industry executives at the Canadian Museum of Civilization for a private reception followed by an exclusive premiere of the new IMAX feature film, Mysteries of the Great Lakes.
