Why are we in Afghanistan?

Canada is helping Afghanistan to become a stable, democratic and self-sustaining state so that it will never again serve as a haven for terrorists, and threaten global and Canadian security. Canada remains in Afghanistan today at the invitation of the Afghan government.

Abandoning Afghanistan would have consequences for Canadians, international security and Afghans. This is why Canada – as one of 36 countries – is taking a leadership role in the UN-sanctioned, multinational security operations in Afghanistan. Development cannot happen if there is no security.

The Afghan people are amongst the poorest in the world. They deserve a brighter future and Canadians want to help. Canada has made a commitment and will stick to its commitment. The men and women of the Canadian armed forces who are in Afghanistan and whose lives are on the line are fully committed to this mission. Canadian diplomats, military personnel and development officials in Afghanistan are worthy of nothing short of our full and continuing support.

What we have accomplished so far?

Canada has pursued an integrated approach, with diplomats, the Canadian Forces, development workers and civilian police working together to enhance security, promote good governance and alleviate poverty.

The military provides security so that civilians can help build local capacity and support programs that allow Afghans to benefit from peace, for example, through the establishment of schools and health clinics. As the population prospers, security improves and allows for the eventual withdrawal of international military forces.

Afghanistan, with Canadian help, is making significant progress. In the last four years Canada has made a difference in the lives of Afghans through:

  • 4.8 million children have been enrolled in primary school
  • 3.5 million refugees have returned
  • 63,000 former combatants have been disarmed and demobilized; and
  • A president, parliament and 24 provincial councils have been elected

We are helping the people of Afghanistan to rebuild their country and to make a better life for themselves and their children. There may be some who want to cut and run, but cutting and running is not the Canadian way. Canada’s work is vital to the free world and the Afghan people.
