Burlington MP, Mike Wallace Hosts Public Meeting on Human Trafficking
Burlington: Mike Wallace, Member of Parliament for Burlington hosted a public meeting on Human Trafficking today. Guest speaker, Joy Smith, MP Kidonan-St. Paul talked about her findings on the growing crime of Human Trafficking. Mrs. Smith is recognized as an expert in this area. She was joined by the RCMP Human Trafficking Coordinator for the Niagara-Hamilton region who spoke about the work the RCMP is doing in Canada.
“Human trafficking is a horrific injustice that exists not only abroad but here in Canada. I have been working hard to combat this crime on a provincial, federal, and international level. However, in order to effectively combat this crime, it will take more than just a few people,” said Mrs. Smith.
In June 2007, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Diane Finley announced an extension of the temporary resident permit (TRP) from 120 days to 180 days for victims of human trafficking. This extension also allows victims to apply for a work permit, an option not previously available. The fees for these initial resident and work permits, which normally cost $200 and $150 each, will be waived.
“These changes are crucial in the battle against human trafficking as they strengthen the ability of victims to prevent further exploitation in the future,” Mike Wallace said. I am proud that the Canadian government is taking an important leadership role at the international level to combat this horrendous crime and protect victims of human trafficking from further exploitation.”
