Mike Wallace becomes Chairman of Marine Industry Caucus

OTTAWA-Mike Wallace, Member of Parliament for Burlington, was selected by his peers on May 9th to become Chairman of the Marine Industry Caucus at its inaugural meeting.

“I am excited and enthused to be working with my fellow Conservative MPs, Senators and members of the Marine Industry. Trade is so incredibly important to the health of our economy and in many respects marine is the gateway to trade and future Canadian prosperity,” said Wallace.

With Canadian-International trade expected to double or even triple in less than fifteen years, and with the marine mode responsible for transporting 97% of non-US trade, it’s clear Canada needs to have it’s marine house in shape in order to achieve these incredible trade expectations.

“There are many issues that stand in the way of achieving this prosperity and it has become increasingly clear that stronger communications between the marine industry and government leaders could help address some of these issues.”

The Marine Industry Caucus is represented by approximately 25 MP’s and Senators from the Conservative Party and an equal number of CEO’s and representatives from the marine industry. The Caucus will hold two formal annual meetings with other meetings for MP’s and Senators throughout the year.

Member MP’s and Senators include those whose region of representation includes large shippers, carriers, ports, terminals and elevators, or relates to their portfolio or committee work (i.e. especially Transport, Fisheries and Oceans, Environment, Industry, International Trade and Finance).

The marine industry’s participation will include CEO’s representing ports, large shippers, domestic and international carriers and marine service companies and Presidents of; The Chamber of Maritime Commerce, Association of Canadian Port Authorities, Canadian Ship Owners Association, Chamber of Shipping of BC, Council of Marine Carriers, Halifax Shipping Association, Shipping Federation of Canada, St. Lawrence Economic Development Council and St. Lawrence Ship Operators.
